2nd July - an evening of rockets!

Post by rwilkinson » Thu Jun 06, 2019 3:13 pm

At our July meeting we're planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 by launching our own "rockets".
But for our version of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory we'll just be fuelling them with water (and compressed air) , rather than high explosives!

I've just been testing my own home-made launch-pad with a prototype projectile:

This launch facility should accomodate any "vehicles" based on 1.5 or 2 litre plastic bottles (I've tried five different types so far), so bring along your own designs and we can test-fire them for you.

There will be prizes awarded for the best efforts, and I understand that the judges will consider artistic impression as well as altitude acheived.

Here's one of my rockets after painting:

this one was inspired by "Dr. Zarkov's rocket-ship" from the Republic Pictures "Flash Gordon" serials in the 1930s.

And here's one which recalls a time when Britain had its own rocket programme - the BLACK ARROW which launched our Prospero satellite in 1971:

And finally a homage to the Titan rockets which launched the ten manned Gemini missions in 1965-66:

NASA used these missions to practice the orbital rendezvous and docking procedures which would be used in Apollo.
And they gave the astronauts vital space experience before going to the Moon: Neil Armstrong flew on Gemini 8, Mike Collins on Gemini 10 and Buzz Aldrin on Gemini 12.

The weather forecast at "Cape Ladybridge" is good for tomorrow, so we'll be able to see how they fly...

Hi all,
as promised i've uploaded 82 photo's to the club's Google page/album....i will leave them in the hands of Ross to share/do with them as he deems fit.

N.B. use the "zoom" function to see people's reactions or the "little things" such as mid-air water droplets/mist-explosions.

Darren.
