Flaring up?

Post by rwilkinson » Fri Mar 29, 2019 9:25 am

Last night, during the course of some tests with an 18mm lens, I captured a transient event near Cassiopeia:

This occurred during a 30-sec exposure just before 9pm.
I wondered if it was a meteor, but the trail looked too short and symmetrical for that. I made a "heat-map" of its intensity:

So next I considered a satellite. Although the Sun had set two hours earlier, it was less than 20 degrees below my horizon, and this object was quite low in the sky (only 30 degrees elevation), so I wondered if it could have been a reflective surface on a satellite glinting in the sunlight?
The Iridium satellites are well-known for this phenomenon, but there were none in the area at that time.
